The game is set in a vast open-world, allowing you to explore the area with great freedom. It takes place on Tsushima Island in the year 1274 and revolves around Sakai Jin, the game’s Last Samurai. During the time, the first Mongol invasion was happening in Japan.

As Sakai Jin, you will have to master the Way of the Ghost and new fighting styles to defeat the enemy Mongols. You will also have to fight for the independence and freedom of the entire country.

Kengo: Master of Bushido

Kengo: Master of Bushido, is a game that only lets you use one button to attack your opponents. The reason for this is to remove the mechanics of button-mashing to instill Bushido in the game. It is admirable that they tried to have the player experience how it is to be like a real Samurai. As the player, you would need the perfect timing and patience to have the character execute moves.

The game takes place during the Genroku Period of Japan from the years 1688 to 1704. Here, the character will use the fighting style of Kendo throughout the game. All in all, there are a total of four modes in the game: Practice, Dojo, Training, and Sensei modes. These modes offer a variety of fighting stages.

For its plot, you will have to focus on winning the Emperor’s Tournament to claim the title of Master of Bushido. The characters also have different storylines in the game. Generally, it is similar to the Dynasty Warriors series’ gameplay. Its story is good, graphics are excellent, and you’ll definitely get into this game fast.

This is the first sequel of the series, and the story is generally based on The Tales of the Heike. The game follows the story of Minamoto no Yoshitsune where he aims to defeat the Taira to avenge his father.

Early in the journey, Yoshitsune meets up with the Tamayori clan, keepers of the Amahagane. These are stones of power that lets a few individuals release Kamui or magical powers.

Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny

Onimusha 2 – Samurai’s Destiny is for the PS2 developed and released by Capcom. It is an action-adventure game and is the 2nd installment to the Onimusha series.

Set in medieval Japan, the story revolves around the new protagonist, Yagyu Jubei. The character is on a quest for revenge, battling a large demon army led by the “demon king”, Oda Nobunaga. In the game, Oda poses as a sinister warlord who eliminated the entire Yagyu clan.

During his quest, Jubei learns of his Oni (demon) heritage. This grants him great powers to slay Oda’s demon forces. He also meets allies who want to defeat the evil demon lord.

Samurai Warriors

This is a copy of the Dynasty Warriors games but based on Japanese warlords. This makes it among the best Samurai games of all time. Samurai Warriors is the very first title of this hack and slash series created by Koei. The story revolves close to the Sengoku period of ancient Japan. This takes place in the 19th century Japan where you take control of a Ronin. You’ll have your character wander throughout a remote village and have him grow in the game. Along the way, you will get involved between rivaling clans, but the good thing about this is its storyline. The gameplay lets you decide and alter the course of the story based on your decisions.

Seven Samurai 20XX is a PS2 game from Sammy Studios. Its concept and story come from the movie Seven Samurai from Kurosawa Akira.

The story takes place in the year 20xx in Japan. Humans and humanoids live together in a light balance in some unnamed city. These humanoids consist of robots, mutants, and cyborgs. The city’s stability and power are kept intact via the Steeple of Light.

The source of the power of this structure is the Child of Heaven. She was then kidnapped by a group of humanoids to break the city’s balance and to wage war.

She then falls in the hands of some villagers who kept her to ransom the city for cash. But when the humanoids and agents from the city set out to take her back, the villagers end up in danger. For protection, they seek help from the Samurai or hunters.

Bushido Blade

Bushido Blade is among the best Samurai games of all time. It is generally a fighting game but different from those in its genre.

You do not attack your enemies non-stop until their health drops to zero. Instead, Bushido Blade aims for you to experience the Bushido code. A match could end in an instant with one deadly strike, or it could take minutes before someone wins.  Since there is no time limit to the match, so you can either stall or attack in an instant.

It definitely was a unique and bold idea to aim for this type of game, and it sure did pay off.

Total War: Shogun 2

Total War: Shogun 2 is a strategic game and is part of the Total War series. It goes back to the 16th-century setting of the very first Total War game, which is in Japan.

Shogun 2 takes place in feudal Japan after the Onin Wars during the Ashikaga Shogunate. Divided into rivaling clans, Japan was under local warlords who fought for control. You will control and manage one of the clans in the game, aiming to dominate the other clans then ruling over Japan.

The regular edition of the game features eight factions. Each of these has different military and political strengths and starting positions. For the limited edition, it includes the Hattori, an exclusive Ninja clan, and the Ikko Ikki.
