The Crescent Towel – Product Description
The origin of this Tenugui design comes from Date Masamunes Kabuto. It displays a huge decor of the crescent moon the warlord is most known for. This is the only golden piece on black-lacquered armor.
The sharp shape of the moon displays the One-eyed Dragon himself, a strong, powerful, yet hot-headed Daimyo of the Sengoku. This was the motif of the Date clan; thus, the image used for this Tenugui is the famous crescent of the warlord.
It features a golden brown shade crescent moon. It goes perfectly on the black cloth to represent the Sengoku era, as well as a modern appeal.
The Tenugui measures approximately 40 x 100 centimeters (H x W) and weighs only 80 grams. Material used for the creation of this is 100% cotton and also includes a type of cord.
A bonus of the product is the Samurai family crest postcard set upon purchase of the Tenugui.
Hand Painted and Hand-Dyed by Edo Craftsmen
The Tenugui is hand painted using the methods of the Edo period craftsmen. All these are hand dyed and painted one by one to perfection.
Each design is hand crafted to replicate the exact image perfectly. Giving off a unique yet beautiful product everyone will enjoy. The patterns and texture are also excellent. These are often depicted via proper color bleeding.
The commercially-available hand printed products are often hand washed. Yet, these do not give off a vibrant color that is striking and appealing.
Proper Care for the Samurai Hand Towel
Washing it the first time, avoid using detergent. Instead, hand wash the product in lukewarm water and wait til the colors settle. Some of the dark shades will become slightly discolored at the start. This is normal since it is only washing off the excess dye that’s used.

The One Eyed Dragon of Oshu
Date Masamune, also known as the One-eyed Dragon, was a Daimyo who stood out from other Daimyo of the time. He was a warrior known for his crescent moon helmet which earned him a fearsome stature.
He was called Dokuganryu due to him missing one eye. In history, Date lost his right eye as a child due to smallpox. Though it is still a mystery how he had lost his whole eye entirely. It is quite interesting since there are a variety of theories about the loss.
The One Eyed Dragon engaged in many battles in history. This included the Battle of Hitotoribashi in the year 1585. After winning in the Battle of Suriagehara, Date turned the Aizu domain into his base.
