The Sanada Clan and the Rokumonsen
The Sanada clan was a Japanese family consisting of great warriors and leaders. They were represented by the Roku Mon Sen which was the family crest of their clan. The Sanada were long connected with the Matsushiro territory in todays Nagano area.
The Roku Mon Sen is also called the Six Coin Crest. It is the Mon or crest of the Sanada clan. The coins are important since the Japanese believe that the dead needs to cross the Sanzu river. This is a place located in the underworld. To be able to cross over to the next life, the dead needed to have a form of toll fee which is six coins.
This is the reason why Sanada had no fear in death during battles. And for the Sanzu river, it is likened to the River Styx in Greek myths. This Roku Mon Sen proudly decorates the clans Sashimono. It also goes for their armor and battle standards.
Roku Mon Sen, the clans crest, symbolizes their steely resolve during times of battle.
