Sanada Yukimura
Born as Sanada Nobushige, Sanada Yukimura was one of the greatest warriors from the Sengoku era. He was the second son of Sanada Masayuki. He is also known as the Crimson Demon of War since his banners and armor were all red. His strategy was to engage in skillful combat versus military commanders.
He was also known as the greatest Samurai of Japan. His peers called him the last hero of the Sengoku Period.
In his youth, his father sent him to the Uesugi clan as a hostage. He did this to return the support against the Tokugawa. Later, his father served Toyotomi Hideyoshi. By then, Uesugi allowed Yukimura to return to his home in Ueda.
Akazonae
As featured in the historical statue, Yukimura wears a vermillion armor. The details are very accurate since experienced artisans created this piece.
The vermillion color shows that Yukimura originally served the Takeda clan. It symbolized bravery. In the battlefield, the color also stood out and brought sense of danger to the opponents.
The artisans painted the cloth, leather, and each part of Yukimuras armor in different methods. This is to to make the differences between each material visible.
Rokumonsen: The Crest of the Sanada Clan
On the base of the figurine, you will find the Rokumonsen. This is the family crest of the Sanada clan. The term Rokumonsen translates to six coins which is also the design of the crest.
This name was derived from the Rikudo. This Buddhist teaching explains the six underworlds where people go to after dying. It is said that the bereaved gave the Rikudosen into the casket since it was needed to cross the river of death.
The Sanada Clan took this concept for their family crest to convey that they were not afraid to die. It showed that they were ready for death when they fought in the battlefield.
The oriflamme with Sanada’s signature color and the Rokumonsen must have frightened the opponents.
