Top 4 Ways on How to Live Like a Modern Samurai

Modern Samurai

So you want to be a modern-day Samurai? Cool. You are one of the few noble individuals who wanted to become one.

Actually, people want to be a Samurai, but they just don’t realize that the path they’re in is already the way of the warrior. What made me come up with this conclusion? Just continue reading.

First of all, I want to tell you upfront that this does not require you growing your hair. You also don’t need to bring a Katana everywhere you go. Do that if you want, but this guide is more on the deeper meaning of becoming a Samurai.

Being a Samurai is more than how movies showed it to us. While Samurai films show us how good they are at handling their Katana or Wakizashi, it doesn’t give us a deeper understanding of them.

We are actually clueless why they’re doing what they’re doing. The values they hold and the beliefs they believe are uncharted waters.

This begs for a deeper question: How do you live a lifestyle like that in the 21st century?

Here are the four things that you need to do to become a modern-day Samurai.

Have a Moral Code

Top 4 Ways on How to Live Like a Modern Samurai

The very first thing that separates Samurai from ordinary warriors is their moral compass. Samurai are not called Samurai because they carry Japanese swords and that they are ruthless killers.

They are called Samurai because of their way of living called the Bushido code. This code emphasizes justice, courage, politeness, sincerity, honor, self-control, and loyalty. If you want to become a Samurai, you must train yourself to have these qualities.

Samurai during the feudal period don’t go around slashing people; they actually care about them. They were the direct similarity of the knights from England.

If you notice, Samurai are good at fighting, but they are also morally upright members of the society. They care about their family, they honor other people, and they were known for their hospitality. This is basically the backbone of being a Samurai. Without these, a warrior cannot be called a Samurai. Someone who doesn’t practice good values can never be considered a Bushi.

Tip: Are you a student? Don’t cheat. Are you an employee? Do your best and be loyal to your boss. No matter what occupation you do have right now, the Bushido code can be applied. This will not only make you a modern-day Samurai, but it will also make you the best version of yourself.

Kenjutsu is the primary skill that Samurai exhibits but that don’t mean it’s the only skill they know. Samurai actually are academic performers. They value intelligence above all else.

What this means is they do not only excel in sword fighting; they are also good at doing other things. As a young child, they are encouraged and taught to read and write.

Some of them are even gifted negotiators to their neighboring countries even though those countries speak a different language. Like the modern-day special forces, these soldiers are motivated to study a field that is very far from their occupation.

The legendary Samurai Musashi Miyamoto is an excellent example of this. He was an author, a painter, teacher and a martial artist all at the same time.

Tip: Are you passionate about the area of music? Be good at it. Do you find learning a different language interesting? Allot at least 15 minutes studying that language. A modern-day Samurai constantly tries to learn the things that interest him regardless if it is relevant to his main career or not.

Live Simply

I know that this is going to be hard, especially if you’re a millennial. If you really want to become a modern-day Samurai, this is one of the things that you should do to be one. Have a simple life.

Samurai are known to have plain lifestyles. They despise luxurious living since they said it’s a threat to masculinity.

Financial literacy is actually something that these people shows. Instead of being impulsive consumers, they are reflective. Machinery is not something that they will buy for warriors are expected to live ordinary lives. They will choose a simple life over an extravagant one.

Tip: So if you want to become a modern-day Samurai, you need to always ask the question: “Do I really need this?” Are there things that are not necessary for your life right now? Let those go. You’ll never know how simplicity will change your life. The intense self-control needed for this will surely have its long term positive effects on your life.

Consistently Live Out Those Principles

Samurai Hoodies

This is where it gets tricky but just like everything else, this is what makes something a habit.

For us to become real Samurai, we need to live it out daily. The greatest  Samurai who existed during the feudal era are the ones who stayed true to what they believed in no matter the consequences.

This doesn’t mean that these people lived pure lives free from inconsistencies. I’m pretty sure that they mess up sometimes. But the real Samurai is someone who stands up and walks the path again even when they sometimes fail.

Honestly, no one really will be able to live these righteous ways consistently. We will always wander away from it. What we need to do is to always try to get back to it, not condemn ourselves in the process and press on.

Living like a Samurai in the 20th century is not going to be a walk in the park, but if you manage to live it out consistently, you are one of the few people that will be respected even at the end of your days. Your legacy in the lives of the people you touch will surely make its mark, and you will never be forgotten even when you’re gone.

Final Thoughts

Most people are unaware that the path they want to take is the path that the Samurai of Japan already traveled to.

Kindness, courage, and loyalty are the characters that we really aspire to get and most of the time, and we unconsciously traverse the path of the Samurai by trying to acquire those qualities. We just don’t know that we are already in it most of the time.

If you want to get a Katana, get one. If you want to have your own Samurai armor, go ahead and buy one. But never wear those without applying the lives they lived because you only really become a Samurai if you learn the way of the warrior.
