Here are the top 4 Samurai-inspired Anime to binge watch.
Top 4: Gin Tama (Gintoki Sakata)

An Anime worthy of a 9/10 rating!
This Anime has the 17th Century vibe, a time when Japan instilled strict isolation policies to all foreign countries. As per history, in 1853 US fleet commanded by Admiral Perry forced Japan’s doors to open and caused the beginning of modernization and the end of the Shogunate.
In Gin Tama, it was stormed by spaceships that came from the four corners of the universe. They eventually occupied Japan and ruled over the country, making the Shogunate puppets and were used as their soldiers.
Gintoki Sakata, protagonist of the show is considered as one of the best Samurai protagonist in Anime history. He is a well-known, high-skilled Samurai who did not obey the rules of the extraterrestrials.
He was the president of Yoruzuya, and is obliged to do every job that his clients request of him. Sakata has characteristics that will really leave a golden touch to your heart once you have watched this Samurai-inspired anime.
If you’re wondering why it’s 9/10, it’s because of the graphics at the beginning of the season. Though, once you get attached to this Anime, you’ll definitely get the hang of it!
It’s an Anime that is really based on Japanese history and culture. Producers found dubbing it to English difficult because of how the jokes were made.
This is a highly recommended Anime as it suits almost everyone. It has a mixture of comedy, parodies, great action and fights, and just simply heartwarming!
Top 3: Rurouni Kenshin
Leather Samurai Wallets for Men
An Anime worthy of 8/10!
This Samurai-inspired Anime has the Japanese Revolution vibe. If you’re a fan of older Anime, then you know that this Anime is lit!
It revolves around the legendary assassin named Hitokiri Battousai during the Bakumatsu era. He was feared as a merciless killer and was never a match to anyone.
At the peak of the Japanese Revolution, Battousai just disappeared without leaving a trace. It has been 10 years of peace since then, but the very mention of his name still give shivers down their spines.
Unknowingly, Battousai retired from being a killer and tried to change his lifestyle to repent from his sins. He became known as Kenshin Himura, a wandering swordsman with a strong will and a cheerful attitude. He vowed to never kill again.

Battousai or Himura had an X-shaped scar and was a redhead. As Kenshin Himura, he is considered among the best Samurai for his skills.
As the story continues, he promised to himself that he would protect people (yes, just like Robin Hood… but in a Samurai version!) and won’t let anyone come to harm.
In this series, Shishio Makoto was the primary antagonist. After his ‘comrades’ in the government failed in their attempted assassination, Makoto spent a decade to build his strength and create an anti-government group.
Okubo Toshimichi approached Himura to stop Shishio’s plan and help protect the people and the new era. Being a Samurai Robinhood, he didn’t actually have the option to decline the mission.
Kenshin Himura’s character was inspired by Kawakami Gensai, known for his legendary swordsmanship and incredible speed. He was so fast that he could assassinate his targets even in broad daylight!
He was a member of the four most notable assassins during the Bakumatsu period.
Top 2: Donten ni Warau (Laughing Under the Clouds)

An Anime worth of 8/10!
This story was set in the Meiji period, when the emperor has been restored. As a result, weapons such as swords were banned from Japan, ending the era of Samurai… or at least, for those who don’t rebel.
This story revolves around three brothers named Tenka, Soramaru, and Chutaro. They have the responsibility of ferrying criminals across the lake where a prison lies. But there’s actually more to the job that bringing prisoners.
The prison is located in a place where a said legendary creature appears every 300 years. Many factions want their hands on it.
Laughing Under the Clouds was a time of the downfall of the Samurai. But don’t let that fool you, for there are many awesome sword-wielding Samurai in this one.
One of the best parts (oops… spoiler!) in the movie is the family dynamic between the brothers. Tenka, the eldest, always felt the responsibility of taking care of his brothers.
Soramaru, on the other hand, was always so desperate to catch up with his older brother’s capabilities. And the youngest, Chutaro, simply idolized Tenka.
They may be the main protagonists of the show, but this movie has a lot more in its sleeve that you think.
Top 1: Samurai Champloo
Samurai Hoodies
An Anime worth of 11/10
This series developed by Manglobe has an alternate version of the Edo period. In this reality, Japan was anachronistic and was in a hip hop setting. It blends elements of Samurai with modern action that dips a lot into comedy.
Japanese Anime is no stranger to hip-hop. But never in history has it ever been integrated as mesmerizing as how it is in Samurai Champloo.
From its aesthetics, up until the soundtrack fueled by rap beats, the protagonist’s subtle designs on kimonos and break-dance inspired fighting style. This Samurai-inspired Anime has all mixed up in a satisfying series.
Champloo follows Mugen, a freedom-loving impudent swordsman, Jin, a stoic and composed Ronin, and Fuu, a brave girl who requested the two to accompany her in a quest across Japan to find the “Samurai who smells of sunflowers.”
Samurai Champloo’s action is among the best of any Anime. Though the main characters use swords, they both have their separate awesome fighting styles (Mugen even uses his shoe and it’s absolutely brilliant!).
Various weapons are used all throughout the series, which makes this series really stand out.
These elements combined with actual historic facts from Feudal Japan create a very rich setting that isn’t common.
This Series is best for everyone as it suits all ages. It is highly enjoyable and definitely unforgettable!
