Rurouni Kenshin
If it’s the Samurai Anime series that almost everyone knows and loves, it’s Rurouni Kenshin. The story takes place during the Meiji period, which is the end of the Samurai era. This was when Japan was in its early years of modernization.
The hero, Kenshin Himura, was a former assassin during the Bakumatsu period. He became a Ronin or wandering Samurai and wielded a reversed sword as a sign that he had sworn to stop killing. Later on, he met his friends whom he was obliged to protect against the dangerous people from his past.

This Samurai Anime series starts with Kagome Higurashi, a young high school student from Tokyo. Falling into a well in her family, shrine led her to the Sengoku era. Here, she met Inuyasha, the half dog-demon.
Kagome accidentally shattered the magical Shikon Jewel embodied in her because of the monster from the Sengoku era tried to take this. This caused the shattered Jewel to disperse across the country.
Because of that, Inuyasha and Kagome start traveling around Japan to recover the jewel’s shards before the demon half-spider Naraku obtain these. Their allies, Kirara, Shippo, Miroku, and Sango, join them in searching for the shards.
Donten Ni Warau
Donten Ni Warau takes place during the Meiji period when the emperor has been restored. With that, carrying swords became illegal in Japan, marking the end of the Samurai era. However, there were still rebellious warriors around.
The uprising rebel Samurai caused crimes to increase. Since the nation lacked warriors to enforce laws, prisons overflowed with criminals. This made the early years of the Meiji era somewhat disordered. With that, a lot of arrested criminals broke out of prison and rampaged across the country.
To solve the problem, the government built a prison in the middle of Lake Biwa to house many criminals. The three brothers were given the task to send the criminals to the location through a ferry. Unfortunately, they had a bigger mission awaiting them.
Donten Ni Warau may be set in the peaceful times of Japan and the decline of the military class, but there are a lot of Samurai in the series. It’s a great story that shows family dynamics and relationship, like the Kumo brothers’ bonds.
Peacemaker Kurogane
Peacemaker Kurogane is a Samurai Anime that depicts the Bakumatsu period. The story of this Anime series involves the Shinsengumi, a special police force under the Tokugawa shogunate.
While one can desire revenge, not anyone can genuinely commit the act. It is difficult, since an avenger may also end up being the victim of retaliation.
Peacemaker Kurogane teaches this lesson through the hero, Ichimura Tetsunosuke. Ichimura had witnessed his parents’ murder, encouraging him to take revenge.

Gintama is the Samurai Anime series that shows different views on what it is to be a Samurai. For Sakata Gintoki, the main character, he believes that being a Samurai means fighting for the ones he wants to protect.

Shigurui

They are tournament rivals who were students training under the same master. The story of this series revolves around their first match.
In 1629, Japan was under the rule of Tokugawa Tadanaga. In the story, the Daimyo held a tournament between swordsmen.
Instead of using the Bokken or wooden swords, participants used steel Japanese swords.
The two swordsmen had their own complications. While Fujiki had only one arm, Irako was blind.
While they had these differences, they had one similar goal. This was to prove who is more worthy of becoming the successor of their master’s school.
Samurai 7
Samurai 7 is set in the future, on a planet that looks different from ours. The story tells about a time when the Samurai began having mechanical bodies.
They engaged in continuous wars and battles. Even when the war had ended, not everyone was able to enjoy peace.
The farmers from the village of Kanna faced a crisis when the Nobuseri bandits attacked them. These bandits had mechanized bodies since their cells had been integrated with machines.
As they faced starvation, they took the risk of hiring Samurai to defend themselves. Since they had no money to offer, they ended up offering rice. Luckily, they managed to hire seven Samurai warriors.
The Samurai trained the villagers in wielding bows, building walls, and creating a ballista. This was to defend their village against the Nobuseri bandits.
When they succeeded in defeating the bandits, the Samurai launched an attack on the capital to overthrow the corrupt Emperor.
